This course deals with following topics - 

(A) Ancient period: Music in Pre-Vedic and Vedic period, music in post-Vedic period, Music references from epics (Ramayan and Mahabharata) and Buddhist, Jain sources

(B) Medieval period: Music in Muslim rule in India, Impact of medieval Bhakti movement on music, Haveli music and Sufi music

(C) Transitions and transformations in Hindustani music – Saam > Jati > Prabandha > Dhrupad > Khayal, Tappa, Thumri, etc. – Origin and development of musical genres, forms and traditions in vocal and instrumental music

(D) Aesthetics notions particular to Gharanas or musical traditions

(E) Music and Rasa theory

(F) Exchange of ideas from other arts, literature and music aesthetics

(G) Major aestheticians in India and their thoughts
